Analyze This: Time for the government to get off the Gaza fence
The Jerusalem Post
For once, Israel's oft-criticized official hasbara (public diplomacy) has not been complacent in its response: It has provided the international press with meticulous weekly reports about the regular flow of food and other goods into Gaza,...and been proactive in trying to focus the press's attentions on the hardships that Hamas's aerial attacks are causing to Israeli civilians.  Read more...

Small country, big ideas
The Economist
Oil and clever diplomacy win friends and influence...Most of that wealth came easily, from oil. But Sheikh Hamad has succeeded in achieving something that other petro-despots have not. Do we really want the freer circulation of cultural goods?
The Art Newspaper
I believe we are likely to see pressures mounting on the museum to give things back to other communities in the future. When objects are free to move, where should they go? To those who most devoutly believe in them in a religious sense? To those who would be the best physical caretakers or the most engaged or sophisticated interpretive community? To those national or local formations that most urgently need them for their sense of identity? Or to the highest bidder?   Read more...

Overseas, Excitement Over Obama
The Washington Post
The primary race generated unprecedented interest outside the United States, much of it a reflection of a desire for change from the policies of President Bush, who surveys show is deeply unpopular around the globe. At the same time, many people abroad seemed impressed -- sometimes even shocked -- by the wide-open nature of U.S. democracy, and the history-making race between a woman and a black man. "The primaries showed that the U.S. is actually the nation we had believed it to be, a place that is open-minded enough to have a woman or an African American as its president," said Minoru Morita, a Tokyo political analyst.
