Candidates and language skills
The Keene Sentinel Now, the leading candidates certainly have mentioned foreign languages. On the Democratic side, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois recently stressed that American students should learn one or two foreign languages to give them a competitive edge, and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York has long advocated expanding access to foreign-language courses...But the candidates have yet to elevate the matter of foreign-language training and knowledge to the high priority that it deserves.

80 % hike in US visas for Indians
Business Standard There has been 80 per cent increase in visas for Indians travelling to the United States, according to Consul General in Mumbai Michael S Owen. A total of 2.26 lakh visas were issued last year, up from 1.25 lakh in 2006. "The government-to-government contacts are important but people-to-people contacts by non-stage actors are more important for the relationship," Owen said while delivering the Lincon Memorial Lecture organised by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

Soothe, seethe
The Economist China does not want the West or its neighbours to get alarmed. It fears that anti-China sentiment abroad could fuel nationalism at home, which in turn could pressure on policymakers to engage in a vicious cycle of tit-for-tat responses. So even as Chinese nationalists have been seething over perceived insults by foreigners, their leaders have been reaching out to traditional rivals.
