Assistant Professor, American University chayden@american.edu
Craig Hayden is currently an Assistant Professor of International Communication at American University's School of International Service. For the 2009 calendar year, Craig served as a CPD Fellow.
At the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, Craig served as a Research Associate focusing on the relationship of media and media technologies to public argument, the rhetoric of foreign policy, and the effects of media globalization on argumentative discourse in the public sphere. His current research through the Center explores the capacity of media frames in Arab media to function as public argument, and in particular, how argument and rhetoric in Arab media provide coherent narratives that sustain anti-American attitudes and complicate international communication campaigns like public diplomacy.
Craig Hayden's dissertation at the USC Annenberg School for Communication examined the role of presidential advisors in sustaining the Bush administration's media-driven rhetorical campaign for war against Iraq. Previous to his academic studies, he worked as a marketing professional for a series of technology-centric firms in California. Craig Hayden also holds an MA in International Relations from USC, and a BA in Politics and Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Craig Hayden served as Project Manager for the Center's Media Framing in the Middle East project.
He is currently writing a book about comparative public diplomacy and the global diffusion of “soft power” as a justification for influence initiatives.
