Hodding Carter III is President and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. He joined the Knight Foundation as President and CEO in February 1998. He previously served as the Knight Chair in Journalism at the University of Maryland College of Journalism, 1995-97.

Carter began his newspaper career in 1959 at the family-owned Delta Democrat-Times in Greenville, Mississippi, where he spent nearly 18 years as reporter-editorial writer, managing editor and editor and associate publisher. Carter is the winner of the Society of Professional Journalists' national award for editorial writing, 1961.

He has worked on two successful presidential campaigns - Lyndon Johnson's 1964 campaign and Jimmy Carter's 1976 bid for the presidency. He served in the Jimmy Carter administration as spokesman for the Department of State and Assistant Secretary of State of Public Affairs.

Carter is a frequent chief correspondent for the PBS documentary series Frontline. He is the winner of four national Emmy Awards and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his public affairs television documentaries for the Inside Story media criticism series. He was also a regular panelist of This Week with David Brinkley (1981-94).

Carter served as host, anchor, panelist, correspondent and reporter for a variety of public affairs television shows on PBS, ABC, CBS, BBC and CNN. He served as a Washington-based opinion columnist for The Wall Street Journal for 10 years, and was a syndicated columnist with United Media/NEA in the early 1990s. Carter is also a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other newspapers and magazines.

Carter is a member of the editorial board of Southern Cultures and former longtime Washington correspondent of World Paper. He is author of The Reagan Years and The South Strikes Back and a contributor to seven other books.

He has also served as President and later chairman of MainStreet, a TV production company that specializes in public affairs television, 1985-98. Hodding Carter holds a Bachelor's degree from Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude in 1957. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, 1965-66.
