Shawn Powers
Research Associate
Candidate for a Ph.D in Communication, USC Annenberg School for Communication


Shawn Powers received his undergraduate degree from the School for Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia in the spring of 2003. While at UGA, Shawn focused his studies on the developing role of international law in global society, and was also a nationally successful inter-collegiate debater for the University's debate society.

After graduation Shawn received a grant from the National Communication Association to teach debate, argumentation and public speaking in Eastern Europe. Upon completion he went on to work as a research assistant at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. where his research focused on issues of non-proliferation and counter-terrorism.

Shawn is currently a completing his Ph.D. at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. His dissertation is titled, "The Geopolitics of News." His areas of research interest include: media studies, new information communication technologies, public diplomacy, the Middle East and political argumentation. Beginning in the fall, Shawn will be a visiting assistant professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication London program.
