WEEKLY EXCHANGES SUPPLEMENT
The following articles are related to educational and cultural exchange programs. Specific topics in this supplement include USG-funded exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright scholarships, Ron Brown Fellowship, International Visitors) as well as issues relating to student visas, study abroad, and NGOs involved in exchanges. The articles are aggregated weekly by STACY MICHELLE GLASSGOLD, USC CENTER ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY.

1. UW PROFESSOR WINS FULBRIGHT AWARD (THE BILLINGS-GAZZETTE AUGUST 7TH 2005): Stephanie Anderson, assistant professor in the University of Wyoming Department of Political Science, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research in Berlin, Germany, where she will study the European Union’s security and defense policy.

2. GREENLIGHTS’ EDWARD WINS FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP (AUSTIN BUSINESS JOURNAL, AUGUST 3RD 2005): The executive director of Austin-based Greenlights for Nonprofit Success has received a Fulbright scholarship that will carry her to the Czech Republic this fall. Deborah Edward will teach nonprofit management at Charles University and work at the National Museum in Prague from September to December this year.

3. UTECH LECTURER TO PURSUE DOCTORAL STUDIES IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP (THE JAMAICA OBSERVER AUGUST 7TH 2005): Mauvalyn Bowen heads to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, United States for doctoral studies in business and industry, having been selected the 2005 Fulbright-LASPAU scholar.

4. WARSH WINS FULBRIGHT (CAMBRIDGE CHRONICLE, AUGUST 4TH 2005): Molly Warsh, a doctoral candidate in the History Department at Johns Hopkins University, has been awarded a grant from the Fulbright Student Program for the 2005-2006 academic year. Warsh will travel to Lisbon, Portugal, to study the Portuguese role in the pearl trade of the 16th and 17th centuries

5. JOHNS HOPKINS SCHOLARS TO STUDY ABROAD ON FULBRIGHT, DAAD GRANTS, AMY COWLES (THE JHU GAZETTE AUGUST 8TH 2005): Four newly minted undergraduate degree holders and five graduate students OF Johns Hopkins received Fulbright Scholar grants. Two additional affiliates each earned a scholarship known as the DAAD from the German Academic Exchange Service, funded by the German government.

6. TWO FAIRFIELD GRAD WIN FULBRIGHT GRANTS, (FAIRFIELD COUNTY BUSINESS JOURNAL AUGUST 8TH 2005): Two Fairfield University graduates have been chosen to receive Fulbright Scholarships for the 2005-2006 academic year. One will travel to Israel and the other to South Korea.

7. STRENGTHENING U.S. PUBLIC DIPLOMACY REQUIRES ORGANIZATION, COORDINATION, AND STRATEGY, STEPHEN JOHNSON, HELLE C. DALE, AND PATRICK CRONIN, PHD (THE HERITAGE.ORG, AUGUST 5TH 2005): In this policy research on national security, the authors provide criticisms of, and suggestions for, the Department of State’s public diplomacy efforts.

8. EXCHANGE PROGRAMS A STRATEGIC ELEMENT OF US FOREIGN POLICY, EMAN AL-AWADHI (KUWAIT NEWS AGENCY, AUGUST 7TH 2005): It is a strategic element of US foreign policy to increase the number of US-sponsored cultural exchange programs in order to improve understanding between the US and societies of the world, said the US Ambassador to Kuwait Richard LeBaron. LeBaron said such programs are especially needed in the Arab and Islamic worlds “where the gaps of misunderstanding are still far wider than they should and need to be.” LINK

US: ACLU HITS BUSH ADMINISTRATION’S ANTI-SCIENCE POLICIES, JAMIE CHAPMAN (WSWS.ORG AUGUST 6TH 2005): One of the most striking manifestations of the Bush administration’s impact on science is the dramatic reduction in foreign scholars studying in the United States. The State Department refused student visas at the rate of 35 percent in 2003, an all-time high. LINK

VIETNAM, ASIAN TO WORK TOGETHER IN ARTS AND CULTURE (VIETNAM NEWS AUGUST 4TH 2005): The Minister of Culture and Information, Pham Quang Nghi, has affirmed Viet Nam’s intent to continue to co-operate closely in arts and culture with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, Japan and South Korea. 11. ED-TECH HELPS SPUR US-CHINA EXCHANGE, COREY MURRAY (ESCHOOLNEWS AUGUST 5TH 2005): A pair of United States senators has introduced legislation that would encourage U.S. students to get to know their Chinese counterparts by trading stories, discussing cultural differences, and learning each other’s languages through online and face-to-face exchanges. 12. MIDEAST-MIDWEST EXCHANGE: STUDENTS FROM AQABA, JORDAN TO VISIT CHICAGO, PRNEWSWIRE (YAHOO NEWS AUGUST 4TH 2005): This month families in Chicago will open their homes to students from Aqaba on the Red Sea in Jordan in a ten day cultural and educational exchange.  The exchange is designed to boost the information technology skills of young Jordanians while building understanding between the American and Middle Eastern communities involved.  LINK

13. TRADE EXPO HEATS UP ZHENG HE ANNIVERSARY IN SEMARANG, INDONESIA (XINHUA AUGUST 3RD 2005): A weeklong international commerce and trade exhibition highlights the products from some 150 native and foreign exhibitors.  The exhibition is part of the celebration of the 600th anniversary of Chinese Ming Dynasty navigator Zheng He’s voyages to Asia and Africa. Zheng He promoted trade and cultural exchange and helped the Chinese and the Indonesians enhance their mutual understanding of each other. LINK

14. SAIPAN MAYOR SPONSORS TWO JAPANESE GROUPS, MARCONI CALINDAS (SAIPAN TRIBUNE, AUGUST 5TH 2005): The Saipan Mayor’s Office recently sponsored two Japanese groups as part of the Japanese Student Exchange program. LINK

15. NEW PROGRAM ENCOURAGES CULTURAL EXCHANGE, BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS (BLACKANTHEM.COM AUGUST 5TH 2005): In the spirit of promoting long-lasting friendships, 52nd Fighter Wing first-term Airmen will meet with German families Aug. 12 when the local nationals open their homes to them through the base’s Adopt an Airman program.

16. US VIRGIN ISLANDS’ RICH MUSICAL TRADITION FINDS A FORUM IN DENMARK (CARIBBEAN NET NEWS, AUGUST 3RD 2005): The US Virgin islands’ Department of Tourism has initiated a cultural exchange with Denmark wherein Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights will travel to Denmark to share the islands’ official music and dance.  Subsequently, a Danish band will travel to St. Croix for a performance at the Island Center for Performing Arts. TEEN TO SPEND YEAR IN GERMANY, LAREECA RUCKER (JACKSON CLARION LEDGER AUGUST 3RD 2005): As a recipient of a Council on International Educational Exchange scholarship, Lindsay Van Landeghem will attend language classes at a small German university.  Then, she will move to a community near Cologne and Bonn to live with a host family. 18. TOURING JAPAN WITH THE FIRST LADY, NICOL JENKINS (BOCA RATON NEWS AUGUST 6TH 2005): Florida First Lady Columba Bush toured the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. Bush said incorporating different cultures and languages into the education system is key for furthering a child’s learning.

19. PAK STUDENTS FACE DIFFICULTY IN GETTING US VISA (PAKISTANLINK.COMAUGUST 9TH 2005): The Acting Consul General of the US, Ms Kay Anske has admitted that many of the youths face difficulties in acquiring student visas for higher education in the United States. LINK

20. ASIA BROADBAND ESTABLISHES STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH CHINA’S LEADING EDUCATIONAL SERVICES ENTITY (PRIMEZONE AUGUST 9TH 2005): Shanghai Broadband Network Inc., Asia Broadband’s Chinese subsidiary, has formed a strategic marketing and sales partnership with China’s leading educational services entity, China Centre for International Educational Exchange (CCIEE). The partnership will deliver a full range of its educational programs including E-Ya Kids English, IE21 Interactive English and TTS platform and expand the availability of blended learning solutions nationwide starting with China’s northeast region. 21. PAKISTAN-IRAN TIES ARE DEEPLY ROOTED IN HISTORY (IRANMANIA NEWS AUGUST 8TH 2005): In an interview with Iran Daily, the Press, Education and Cultural Counselor of Pakistan Embassy in Tehran, Rashid Ahmad, spoke about the range of common cultural affinities between Iran and Pakistan. Pakistan-Iran cooperation in media, culture and education is governed by the Pakistan-Iran Cultural Agreement of March 9, 1956, in which cultural exchange programs are signed between the two countries periodically.
