E) WEEKLY EXCHANGES SUPPLEMENT

The following articles are related to educational and cultural exchange programs. Specific topics in this supplement include USG-funded exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright scholarships, Ron Brown Fellowship, International Visitors) as well as issues relating to student visas, study abroad, and NGOs involved in exchanges. The articles are aggregated weekly by STACY MICHELLE GLASSGOLD, USC CENTER ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY.

C.1) USG–FUNDED EXCHANGE PROGRAMS (SCROLL DOWN TO SECTION C.2 FOR OTHER TOPICS)

1. PITZER COLLEGE BREAKS RECORD AND WINS 7 FULBRIGHT GRANTS, JASON NEWELL (DAILYBULLETIN.COM MAY 20TH 2005): Pitzer College in Claremont, CA has received a record-breaking seven Fulbright grants this year, a national best for schools of its size of fewer than 1,000 students. Six Pitzer students named to the Fulbright program will be studying in South Korea, Ecuador, Taiwan, Indonesia and Argentina.  Alumnus David H. Wells won a grant for Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India.

2. FOUR FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SDSU STUDENTS, DAVID E. GRAHAM (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE MAY 21ST 2005): San Diego State University held commencement ceremonies Sunday, honoring graduates who this year included two of the university’s first students to win prestigious Fulbright Scholarships to travel abroad. Aaron Pratts will head to Malaysia for 10 months to teach English in a high school on that country’s eastern coast through his Fulbright Scholarship. A second Fulbright scholar, Dale Russell, was graduated with a master’s in political science and will study in the Netherlands. Two other Fulbright students who graduated last year will study in Germany and Mexico.

3. THIRD FRESNO STATE FACULTY MEMBER WINS FULBRIGHT SPECIALIST AWARD (FRESNOSTATENEWS.COM, MAY 18TH 2005): For the first time in Fresno State history, three faculty members have won the prestigious Fulbright Senior Specialist award in one year. Dr. Benjamin Boone, assistant professor of music, will be sharing his expertise this summer at A. Russo Balti State University in Moldova.  Health science professor Dr. Miguel Perez is currently in South Africa working on an HIV/AIDS project. Dr. William Mallios, a business professor in the Department of Information Systems and Decision Sciences, shared his experience in fall 2004 at two universities in South Korea and the Peoples Republic of China.

4. TWO FULBRIGHTS FOR CALVIN COLLEGE (CALVIN NEWS, MAY 18TH 2005): Calvin senior Aaron Iverson earned a Fulbright to spend 2005-2006 studying sustainable agriculture at the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Peru.  James Robin King, a 2004 Calvin graduate will study the application of Islamic teaching on non-violence to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at the University of Jordan’s Center for Strategic Studies in Amman.

5. FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR WILL SHARE HER INSIGHT ON ISLAMIC ISSUES AT UWGB (GREENBAYPRESSGAZETTE.COM, MAY 19TH 2005): Ibtesam Al-Atiyat, a lecturer at Balqa Applied University in Jordan and program officer with the Jordanian National Commission for Women, will be a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for academic 2005-2006.  She will be teaching in the social change and development and women’s studies academic units and will present a public lecture and have other engagements in the community.

6. PROFESSOR RECEIVES FULBRIGHT TO TEACH IN ICELAND (BOSTON UNIVERSITY BRIDGE, MAY 19TH 2005): Karen Jacobs, a clinical professor of occupational therapy at Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, recently was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the University of Akureyri in Iceland during the 2005-2006 academic year. An internationally recognized expert in ergonomics, Jacobs will teach with occupational therapy colleagues at the university in areas such as assistive technology, ergonomics, marketing, and professional development.  She also will supervise occupational therapy students on scholarly projects and research.

7. POLITICAL SCIENCE PROFESSOR SELECTED FOR FULBRIGHT PROGRAM RESEARCH CHAIR, RICHARD MANLY (CSULB NEWS, MAY 18TH 2005): Ron Schmidt, a political science professor at CSULB, has been selected to hold a 2005-06 Fulbright Scholars Program Research Chair at the University of Montreal in Canada beginning in the fall. In his proposal to the Fulbright Program, Schmidt developed an analytic framework to do a comparative study of immigrant settlement policies between Canada and the United States.

C.2) OTHER NEWS ON EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE

8. AIP JOINS ACADEMIC, SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATIONS IN CALLING FOR VISA REFORMS (THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS BULLETIN OF SCIENCE POLICY NEWS NUMBER 75, MAY 23RD 2005). A group of 40 academic, scientific and engineering organizations have joined together in a newly-released statement that, while recommending improvements to the visa application process for foreign students and scientists, also acknowledges the reforms that have already taken place.

9. US UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHES OFFICE IN FUDAN (PEOPLE’S DAILY ONLINE MAY 20TH 2005): The University of North Carolina (UNC) from the Unites States established an office in Fudan University in Shanghai.  Molly Corbett Broad, president of the 16-campus university, said the idea of the office is to build a framework around all the activities of North Carolina universities that focus on China.

10. IRAQI STUDENTS, STANFORD PROFESSORS SHARE VIEWS, WILL OREMUS (THE STANFORD DAILY MAY 24TH 2005). Three Iraqi students traded ideas about education and politics with Hoover Institution Fellows Williamson Evers and Larry Diamond last night at a panel organized by the student group Stanford-Iraq Student Exchange, or SISE.

11. CLINTON SAYS POLITICS SHOULDN’T STOP SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS, CANDACE CHOI, ASSOCIATED PRESS (NEWSDAY.COM MAY 21ST 2005): During her commencement address, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told graduating students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday they shouldn’t let politics interfere with the pursuit of science. Clinton said she fears the proud American tradition of free inquiry in both science and democracy has been threatened in recent years. Clinton also criticized the government’s recent discouragement of student visas granted to foreign students.

12. “WE ARE IN DANGER OF DRIVING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AWAY” (EDUCATION.GUARDIAN.CO.UK MAY 24TH 2005): The full text of a speech made by the vice-chancellor of Sheffield University and chairman of Universities UK’s international strategy group, Robert Boucher, to the UK Visas event.

13. SOUTHAVEN, TN CITY OFFICIALS GREETED A TANZANIAN DELEGATION VISITING THE STATE AS PART OF A POLITICAL EDUCATION EXCHANGE, TRACY ADAMS (DESOTOTIMES.COM MAY 19TH 2005): As a member of the American Council of Young Political Leaders, Southaven Mayor Greg Davis was chosen to host a group of five Tanzanian delegates during their four-day trip to the United States. The American Council of Young Political Leaders is a bipartisan, non-profit educational exchange organization with programs in dozens of countries, including Africa.

14. STANFORD UNIVERSITY BUCKS TREND, SEES INCREASE IN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, MELISSA FUSCO (THE STANFORD DAILY MAY 20TH 2005): While post-Sept. 11 immigration laws have caused a nationwide drop in the number of international students coming to the United States, Stanford has bucked the trend.

EASTON MAN TURNS HELPING STUDENTS INTO FULL-TIME CAREER, GWENN GARLAND, DELMARVA BUSINESS WEEKLY (DELMARVANOW.COM MAY 23RD 2005): After helping 11 Eastern European students find housing for their summer jobs in the US, Doug Lozinak, started a new company to help international students full-time.  This former McDonald’s manager has launched People First International, which helps foreign students find jobs and housing.

16. CULTURAL EXCHANGE PLANNED BETWEEN PRAIRIE ROSE CHUCKWAGON AND CHINA, LAINIE MAZZULLO (WICHITA BUSINESS JOURNAL MAY 20TH 2005):
The People’s Republic of China signed a formal letter this week inviting the Prairie Rose Wranglers to China for a cultural exchange in 2006. The agreement is between Thomas Etheredge, president of Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper in Butler County, and the senior director of Poly Culture & Arts Co. in Beijing.

17. EXCHANGE PROGRAMS OPEN DOOR INTO CULTURE: TEENS FROM WASHINGTON COUNTY FAMILIES HOSTING FOREIGN STUDENTS WILL LEARN ALONGSIDE THEIR VISITORS, JILL SMITH (THE OREGONIAN MAY 19TH 2005):
The Northwest International Study Exchange, which places foreign students with local families for short exchange programs, will be conducting a free three-week cultural “summer camp” based in Portland. The catch: The families of the participating teenagers will be taking a Taiwanese teen into their home for the duration of the program.

INTERSTATE CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM: 20 GOA YOUTH ON J&K VISIT, INF (MAY 21ST 2005): Under inter-state cultural exchange program, a group of 20 youth from Goa arrived at Patnitop to share their views with the local youth yesterday.  The Ministry of Youth Affairs from the Government of Goa sponsors the program in collaboration with Department of Youth Service and Sports, Jammu and Kashmir government.

19. COPS COMBAT OVERSTAYING BY FOREIGNERS, EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE (EXPRESSINDIA.COM MAY 19TH 2005): The Pune Police has started a special drive against foreign students and tourists who are overstaying in the city, even after their visas have expired.
