The following articles are related to educational and cultural exchange programs. Specific topics in this supplement include USG-funded exchange programs (e.g., Fulbright scholarships, Ron Brown Fellowship, International Visitors) as well as issues relating to student visas, study abroad, and NGOs involved in exchanges. 1. NEW FULBRIGHT: AWARD FOR FOREIGN SCIENCE STUDENTS IS PART OF STATE DEPARTMENT EFFORT TO PROMOTE US EDUCATION, SUSAN MORRISSEY (CHEMICAL AND ENGINEERING NEWS, JANUARY 16TH 2006): The State has announced a new International Fulbright Science Award for Outstanding Foreign Students in Science & Technology. 2. THREE SDSU FACULTY EANR FULBRIGHT GRANTS, LORENA NAVA (SDSUNIVERSE, JANUARY 16TH 2006): Three San Diego State University faculty members are headed abroad on Fulbright Scholar grants for the first half of 2006. The recipients are Alan E. 3. DA NANG STUDENTS GET A BETTER IMAGE OF AMERICA (VIET NAM NEWS, JANUARY 16TH 2006): Hundreds of Vietnamese students gathered at an American Day event organized by the US Consulate General and Da Nang University in the central city last Friday.

4. YALE URGES ALUMNUS BUSH TO LOOSEN FOREIGN STUDENT VISA RULES (BLOOMBERG, JANUARY 12TH 2006) Yale University President Richard Levin said he helped persuade the school’s most powerful alumnus to ease student visa restrictions imposed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.  Levin is among U.S. college presidents, including the leaders of Harvard and Princeton universities and Dartmouth College, who are pushing George W. Bush, Yale Class of ‘68, to improve the visa process for visiting scholars and make American schools more accessible to foreign students.

5. SENATORS LANDRIEU AND VITTER, GOVERNOR BLANCO MEET DUTCH OFFICIALS BEFORE TOURING STORM PROTECTION (POLITICSLA.COM, JANUARY 11TH 2006): The Louisiana Delegation arrived in the Netherlands yesterday to take part in an educational exchange to discuss the many shared storm and flood protection challenges Louisiana and the Netherlands face. 6. CULTURAL EXCHANGE MAKES A VIRTUE OF ART WITH ATTITUDE (SYDNEY MOPRNING HERALD, JANUARY 12TH 2006): Four Indonesian contemporary artists are visiting Australia as part of the three-week Gang Festival, an artist exchange program that began last July. 7. KOREAN, AUSTRALIAN TEACHERS SEEK CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING, CHUNG AH-YOUNG THE KOREA TIMES, JANUARY 11TH 2006): This year, about 100 Korean teachers of elementary, middle and high schools in the region and 18 Australian teachers and educational experts are living together at the camp held at the Korea UNESCO Culture Center in Kyonggi Province for two weeks. http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200601/kt2006011119554810600.htm

8. BRITISH POEMS TO LIFT SPIRITS OF COMMUTERS ON SUBWAY, YANG LIFEI- BEIJING TIMES (SHANGHAI DAILY, JANUARY 12TH 2006): Metro passengers will be able to read four British poems translated into Chinese next month during a cultural exchange program called Poems on Metro. 9. MORE AND MORE KENYANS BENEFIT FROM CHINESE SCHOLARSHIP, ASSISTANCE (PEOPLE’S DAILY ONLINE, JANUARY 13TH 2006):  According to official statistics, over the years, China has granted scholarships to more than 200 Kenyans, most of whom study in China for five or even eight years. Last December, with the help of China’s Ministry of Education, the University of Nairobi became Africa’s first varsity to establish a full-fledged institute to teach Chinese as a foreign language. China’s Ambassador to Kenya Guo Chongli hailed the launch of the institute as a significant milestone in the history of Sino- Kenyan educational exchange.

10. MUSIC FESTIVAL PROMISES CULTURAL EXCHANGE (ABC NORTH COAST NSW, JANUARY 13TH 2006): The Exodus festival begins today at the Bald Rock Bushland Retreat near Tenterfield, in northern New South Wales.  Organisers say the four-day organic and electronic dance music festival is a unique event which combines the best elements of an outdoor dance party with live national and international acts.
