The 6-month anniversary for Al Jazeera's English satellite TV channel comes up mid-month, and the many challenges that beset the organization appear to have bubbled to the surface in the months since the channel debuted November 16.
The big hurdle, of course, is to be seen by the multitudes of available TV viewers in America. This has not happened to date. Major American satellite and cable providers have not risked putting AJE on their systems because of its parent Arabic channel's controversial depiction of terrorists.
AJE's invisible American channel has reportedly frustrated AJE players across the board who had been... FULL TEXT

From their offices in Washington and its suburbs, U.S. government officials charged with explaining the American way to publics abroad were put to the test last week by the Virginia Tech shootings.
Alhurra, the U.S. government's TV channel in the Middle East and Europe, which beams programs from the nearby Washington suburb of Springfield, Virginia, continually updated the Virginia Tech campus massacre in which 32 persons were shot to death by a deranged student. As the story developed, Alhurra included live interviews with Arab students who talked about the 2,000 Arabs that attend Virginia Tech. They mentioned how the Arab... FULL TEXT

The latest Middle East TV ratings that list actual tune-in of news channels, obtained exclusively by Worldcasting, show business as usual but also some surprises.
Al Jazeera, the Qatari government-owned channel, continues to hold forth in popularity in Egypt. Al Arabiya, funded in part by the Saudi government through a holding company, once again tops others in Saudi Arabia by a wide margin, but it also garnered impressive audience ratings in Iraq, where Alhurra, the U.S. government service, continues to trail its competition, there and elsewhere.
The TV ratings by the independent polling organization, IPSOS-STAT, depict "day before" actual viewing.... FULL TEXT

Who is the fairest of them all?
Worldcasting refers to White House presidential aspirants, and where public diplomacy could be headed in the next administration.
What emerges in our admittedly unscientific survey of several PD practitioners past and present, are some basic concerns: Will the next administration realize the availability of abundant PD resources in both the U.S. public and private sectors? Will they utilize these resources to further foreign policy and national security interests? And if so, will the next administration proceed wisely and responsibly?
Some feel that the practice of public diplomacy is considered sacred and ought not... FULL TEXT

Miami, Fla. -- More than 70,000 celebrants are expected to pack Miami's Orange Bowl to mark Fidel Castro's departure, whenever that may come. TV/Radio Marti are at the ready to beam stories back to Cuba with expanded broadcasts.
The Orange Bowl blast, sanctioned by the City of Miami, will doubtless be mega-covered by domestic U.S. and international media, but there will be no cracking open of Piñatas, which will be officially banned from the Orange Bowl by the City.
Lots of partying can be expected elsewhere, especially throughout Miami's Little Havana neighborhoods along the miles of Calle Ocho (SW 8th... FULL TEXT
